The Food Poisoning Lawyer at the principal office located in Houston, Texas, learned today from the FDA that Chobani, Inc. has voluntarily recalled Greek yogurt products after they were linked to 89 consumer complaints of illness after consumption. http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm367298.htm

“This Chobani Recall follows nearly a week after Chobani sought to quietly remove the yogurt from store shelves without alerting the public, a strategy the U.S. Food and Drug Administration called ‘unusual.’” Chobani’s problems began last Friday, when unhappy yogurt-eaters began to complain, flooding the company’s Facebook and Twitter pages with reports of foul smells, bloated containers, and gastrointestinal distress after consumption. Some commented on the characteristically thick Greek yogurt’s “runny” consistency and said they would not buy Chobani again. Chobani stopped distributing the products after receiving these reports.

The affected products were distributed to retail stores nationwide. Cups with the code 16-012 and expiration dates between 9/11/2013 and 10/7/2013 are subject to the recall. At this time, the voluntary recall includes the following products:

Chobani 6 oz. cups – all flavors
Chobani 16 oz. tubs – all flavors
Chobani 32 oz. tubs – all flavors
Chobani 3.5 oz. cups – all flavors
Chobani BiteTM 3.5 oz. cups – all flavors
Chobani FlipTM 5.3 oz. containers – all flavors
Chobani Champions® cups 3.5 oz. – all flavors
Chobani Champions® tubes 2.25 oz., 8, 16 and 36 count – all flavors

Though Chobani claims that the culprit is a mold commonly found in the dairy environment, Mucor circinelloides, the Law Firm believes that, consistent with reported symptoms, Staphylococcus or Salmonella could be another possible culprit for the symptoms consumers reported after ingesting the recalled products. The investigation is ongoing and the Law Firm will remain informed on any new information released by the investigating authorities in the coming days.
