On February 19, 2016, the CDC issued an update to the Salmonella Virchow outbreak associated with Garden of Life RAW Meal Organic Shake & Meal mix. There are now 18 people infected across 15 states. States affected by the outbreak include Florida with 1 case, Massachusetts with 1 case, Maryland with 1 case, Minnesota with 2 cases, New Jersey with 2 cases, New Mexico with 1 case, North Carolina with 1 case, Ohio with 1 case, Oklahoma with 1 case, Oregon with 1 case, Rhode Island with 1 case, Tennessee with 1 case, Texas with 1 case, Utah with 2 cases, and Wisconsin with 1 case. So far only four people have required hospitalization, and no deaths have been reported.
Garden of Life LLC has issued two recalls for products contaminated with Salmonella. A full list of recalled products can be found here. Consuming any recalled product may result in a Salmonella Virchow infection. Salmonella infections will produce symptoms including abdominal cramping, fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These symptoms will appear between 24 and 72 hours after infection. Children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of developing a serious illness.
